It is the second Golden Age, where growth and prosperity are on the rise again, the city is a dynamic hive of production and the population is rising. In the streets of Amsterdam North, Gerrit Boon - a talented, yet humble carpenter - began his business, not realising that the birth of a legendary institution was about to happen. As you continue to read, you will get to know us a bit better and understand why we do what we do - and why we do it with the honesty and passion that we do.
Gerrit’s only son, Jacob, ran a successful and respected business for many years, and in 1944, with no heir of his own, he placed an advert in a local newspaper to find a suitable candidate to take over his life’s work. Jacobus (Koos) Huber answered the advert, and soon found himself at the helm of a thriving compnay - which he relocated to Edam in 1970 as a result of accelerated growth. And so our rather unusual name was born – Boon Edam.
Today, Boon Edam is very much part of an authentic and close community. The business provides many jobs in the local area, and is active in event sponsorships and cultural preservation. People throughout the area know the Boon Edam enterprise, and proudly acknowledge its part at the heart of the local community.
Koos was the grandfather of our current CEO, Niels Huber - who continues to lead the family business in a quietly confident way. This third generation leadership places a lot of emphasis on talent, and keeping the company continually growing.
Invented in 1888, by Philadelphian Theophilus van Kannel, the revolving door was designed to solve the problem of a large amount of air coming into a building. The system of three or four wings around a central cylinder dramatically reduces drafts and noise pollution, and makes heating or cooling the inside space more efficient. It was at this point that the ‘always open, always closed’ principal was born.
This style of door also allow a higher number of people to pass through a space quickly – simultaneous entering and exiting - so it is only fitting that the first wooden revolving door was ordered during a time of growth in Amsterdam.
We work with the philosophy that there was a time when all was right with the world. Where we shopped at speciality stores because it was there that we received the best expert advice as well as knowing we were getting the best sourced product or service. We visited the green grocer, the butcher and we put our trust in the pharmacist dispensing from glass jars behind his wooden counter.
These were the good old days, where old fashioned principles and values mattered and following through on your promises was valuable. This was a premium age, and we at Boon Edam take you back there. Back to the future of heartfelt expertise and honest professionalism.
The business is now over 140 years old, employs over 1,300 people globally, and has distributors caring for every corner of the world. The Huber family has always had strong values, and this remains true in how we both lead and live within the Boon Edam community. It is a culture which starts from the top. In 1988 we acquired a presence in the United States of America, where we saw further growth - not only with regards to our colleagues, but also from the introduction of a wide range of security barriers and solutions. Security is an important and rapidly expanding area for us, and this product portfolio extension has seen exciting and prestigious partnerships being formed in order to provide solutions for our clients.
We have evolved from creating that first wooden revolving door into a mini-multinational organization that conceptualizes, engineers, designs, manufactures and installs a range of traditional and contemporary entry solutions. Safety and Sustainability Matters
When it comes to practicing social responsibility, we think both globally and locally. As a major player in entrance technology, we are constantly reviewing each part of our global business. We take this area of our business very seriously and invest a lot of time and energy into taking both small and large steps along the road to a better world.
Our offices are fitted with roof-top solar panels, eco toilets, motion-activated light sensors in all our spaces, large windows letting in natural daylight and our powder coating process is both kind to the environment whilst still being significantly more durable than conventional finishes.
We believe that our corporate social responsibility goes a lot further than just legalities and compliance. Responsible principals are embedded in our organisation and cover our values, ethics and codes of conduct. We are, at heart, a family business and are intricately involved in our local community development and event sponsorships. Joe Imhoff joined Boon Edam in 2006 bringing with him over 20 years of leadership and manufacturing experience spanning many industries and product types. Since 2006 Joe has developed a team of key professionals and led the transformation of the business, now recognized as a top producer in the industry, capable of double-digit growth while improving quality and delivery.
Daniel joined Boon Edam in 2005 as the first Chief Financial Officer for the combined Boon Edam and Tomsed entity. He previously worked with Ernst & Young LLC in the entrepreneurial services division working with rapidly growing companies. In the private sector before joining Boon Edam, Daniel worked as Chief Operating Officer for a market research company as well as a Vice President of Finance for a technology start-up in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
Greg Schreiber has been with the company a total of 15 years. His career spans over 20 years in the security entrance and door industry in a variety of sales management roles, including National Sales Manager for Boon Edam since 2007, after the acquisition of Tomsed Corporation. Greg has successfully steered the North American and Latin American sales teams to produce double-digit sales growth in each of the last 4 years. A native of Pittsburgh, Greg graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Business Administration and currently lives in Venetia, PA.
Valerie started her career at Boon Edam in Inside Sales and was promoted to Inside Sales Manager in 2009. After managing the Inside Sales Team for three years, she was promoted to Vice President of Product and Customer Support where her role transitioned into Vice President of Customer Experience leading the entire Customer Support Organization of Boon Edam Inc. She has also been a part of Boon Edam Inc.’s Executive Management Team for the last 6 years. A native of North Carolina, Valerie has a degree in Business Management and lives in a suburb of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mark Perkins has over 25 years’ Sales and Operations experience in the Automatic Door and Physical Security Industries, beginning in 1991 with Stanley Access Technologies as a Sales Representative in Western Michigan. With over 13 years’ experience at Boon Edam, Mark is currently leading business development initiatives across the USA and Canada, and assisting the Boon Edam USA operations in managing its global account customer base. He resides with his wife in Eaton Rapids, MI. Mark is a graduate from the University of Detroit with a BS in Accounting.
Kevin Thomasson has over 16 years of sales, marketing, and operations experience. He has managed and directed teams from ChannelAdvisor, LexisNexis, and SciQuest. With these companies Kevin developed initiatives, processes, and strategies that increased customer retention and improved customer satisfaction across multiple product lines. As a native of North Carolina, Kevin grew up in Elon, NC and graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Business Administration. He currently resides in Raleigh, NC.
Kurt has been employed at Boon Edam for over 21 years serving in multiple roles including Vice President of Technical Services, Training and Quality. Over the past four years, Kurt has worked closely with our Enterprise Sales Team as an advisor for security solutions to many Fortune 1000 companies and is currently a Lenel Certified Associate. Kurt graduated from the University of Utah with BS and MBA degrees and currently lives with his wife and children in the Raleigh North Carolina area.
Royal Boon Edam is still a private company, owned by the Huber family with the third generation currently at the helm.
Niels Huber is the third generation of his family to manage Boon Edam. He joined the company at the age of 19, gaining work experience in every area of the business. After a stint driving one of our delivery trucks, Niels was active in different roles ranging from sales to service & maintenance and manufacturing. He took over as Chairman of the Board from his father in 2002.
Having joined Boon Edam in 1991, Lourens has been with the company for over 20 years. He has fulfilled several different roles in the commercial side of the business, focusing on export and international sales. In 2001 Lourens joined the Board of Directors, responsible for all sales, marketing and business development activities.
Having fulfilled a range of technical roles with other companies, Mark joined Boon Edam in 2006 to focus on improving our manufacturing processes. Not long after he started, he became the Managing Director of our Edam manufacturing facility and in 2010 he became the Chief Technical Officer in charge of Research & Development, Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality.
Hendrik Havik joined the Boon Edam manufacturing facility in Edam in 2005, bringing with him vast financial experience from a variety of sectors. Four years later, he relocated to the Boon Edam holding company to setup the Group Finance department. 2015 saw Hendrik placed as the Chief Financial Officer responsible for finance, IT, legal and taxation. His mission within the business is to deliver peace of mind support and provide solutions that ensure business growth.
